General Questions
What is Passpack?
A Free Online Password Manager. Think of it as a password manager, automatic login, secure messaging system and personal vault all in one. With Passpack you can quickly login to websites, as well as organize and store logins and private notes. Save up to 100 entries for free!
Passpack is a cure for swiss cheese memory.
Can Passpack staff read my passwords?
Nope. Never. Passpack stores your locked pack for you without knowing what's inside. Passpack can not unlock your private data. Only you can, with your Packing Key.
Is Passpack just for passwords?
It's your account, use it for whatever you want: Frequent Flyer miles, registration numbers, travel plans, notes, or even just links that you'd like to keep private.
Why do I need a password manager?
Many people use easy to remember, and thus easy to guess, passwords. Others use one password for everything, or just two or three to separate their social networking from their banking. If you DO use a separate strong password for every single site, then where on earth are you going to keep them?Word documents and excel sheets aren't enough, even if you password protect those a ten dollar tool can crack it open. Keeping passwords stored in your email is also dangerous: it may be easier to find that way, but it's entirely unencrypted and an easy grab for scammers, viruses and trojans.
An encrypted, dedicated program is the only safe solution. Period. Your only real choice is if you want an offline password manager, or an online one.
Security & Privacy
Is Passpack secure?
Very secure. Passpack uses a US Government approved algorithm to encrypt your passwords to which only you hold the key (your Packing Key!).
Who protects my passwords from Passpack staff?
Why, you do! You pick your Packing Key, it's known only to you and is never sent to Passpack. Thus, your information is only ever decoded in your browser. Even if we wanted to look at you information (which we don’t!) all we would see would be a jumbled mass of data. If you are worried about deletions, Passpack keeps backups of everything and you can keep your own personal back ups.
Is it safe to use Passpack in a crowded office?
Passpack provides hidden password fields while you are looking at your password entries (they look all scrambled up). These fields can be unhidden at your command, however, so you can see your passwords. Also, Passpack will time out due to a lack of activity, so that even if your back is turned or you are called away briefly, you won’t have to worry about your privacy.
What if my internet connection goes down?
For times when you might not be online, we built Passpack Desktop which can be installed on your computer, and synchronized with your Passpack account. It's perfect to use as a personal backup. Passpack Desktop can be downloaded here. You can even use it without a Passpack account if you'd like - it's your choice.
How long will my data remain in your servers?
Passpack will delete an account only if there has been no successful logins for six consecutive months. If you keep logging in, we keep your data available.
What if I forget my Password, or Packing Key?
You can request a password reset here. However - DO NOT forget your Packing Key. We can't reset that for you since we never knew it in the first place. We can, however, give you a Packing Key Rollback. This only works if you recently changed your Packing Key and remember the old one, but not the new one. We can set it so that you can enter with your old Packing Key.

Free vs. Paid Accounts
Is my Passpack account mine forever, for free?
Free accounts will always stay free, and your account is yours to keep as long as you don't abandon it. Paid upgrades are available, and are built to fit the needs primarily of professionals and businesses. These are optional, and the free accounts are more than enough for most folks, you will not be required to purchase anything for your personal use.
I'm a freelancer/independant contractor, can I use a free account?
If you need to manage passwords in order to get your job done, then you should purchase a paid upgrade. The Pro account is best suited for single, working professionals at a very low entry level price.
Do the people I share with have to upgrade too?
No, of course not. Businesses are only required to purchase one paid upgrade as their main password repository. The rest of your employee and client accounts can be free.
